3-month-old suffers from congenital heart disorder where an extra blood vessel failed to close after birth
AFTER two miscarriages, Ooi Soo Yi, 31, was overjoyed when her daughter was born three months ago.
However, her excitement was shortlived when baby Ashley Poi Pei Ying was diagnosed with a heart condition.
“When Ashley was a month old, my husband and I brought her for routine check-ups, but at that time, the doctors did not detect anything wrong with her.
“However, two months later,
our daughter started breathing rapidly, rejected her milk and her body temperature was high,” she said.

She and her husband, Alvin Poh Wai Hong, 30, immediately brought Ashley to Serdang Hospital where she was diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus, a congenital heart disorder in which an extra blood vessel fails to close after birth.
The toddler was then transferred to Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre here.
Paediatric cardiologist Dr Lim Miin Kang said in her present clinical condition, Ashley, who is on respiratory support and under critical care, would need to undergo surgery immediately.

Ooi said because of the heart condition, her daughter also suffered from several infections, and they were informed by the hospital that the infections would worsen if not treated immediately.
Ooi, who resigned from her job when she was three months’ pregnant with Ashley, said they now faced the burden of raising RM40,000 for their baby’s operation.
The family had tried to raise money, including withdrawing RM7,000 from Ooi’s Employees Provident Fund account, but it was not sufficient.
“We can hardly make ends meet with so many expenses for our daughter.
“We hope that the public can help us,” said Ooi.
